They worked very hard these years to make the money for thier daughters to study in a foreign country.

They have worked very hard these years to make the money for thier daughters to study in a foreign country.

May I ask if both simple past and present perfect can be use in these examples?

Which would be the best answer?

Neither sentence sounds good to my ear for various reasons. My suggestion: They worked very hard during those years / in those days to make enough money for their daughters to study abroad. Since the activity (working hard) is completely ended and in the past, which is indicated by in those days , the past tense must be used.

Neither sentence sounds good to my ear for various reasons. My suggestion: They worked very hard during those years / in those days to make enough money for their daughters to study abroad.
Since the activity (working hard) is completely ended and in the past, which is indicated by in those days, the past tense must be used.
