They vs. It

This sends most of his left ear and cheek flying across the room. They hit the wall, sticking to it.

Is "they hit" right there, or should it be "it hits"?

That's what was confusing me because they (the ear and cheek) are being sent in parts towards the wall, hence why I thought "they" might be better. Or is that a British English way of looking at it?

I doubt it. I don’t think they sounds bad in the sentence; it’s just that I think it is more appropriate. You might get different opinions.
