They slept where they could.

Hi,
I saw a sentence like this: They slept where they could (they were travelling to some remote place on foot).
I wonder what is omitted in this sentence.
Should the complete version look like this: They slept in whatever place they could found?

Can I follow this example to make sentences like these?
When the starvation came, people ate what they could.
When the drought happened, the community drank what they could.
He studies English when he could.
Daddy begged whom he could to help his son get out of the heavy car, when it tipped over and landed on him.

Thanks very much.

  • Yes, that's the idea.
  • But I'd prefer to say that the longer meaning is They slept in whatever place they could sleep .

Hi, An Bryant. Please use real words, like "I" and "you" when posting here.

Wht kind of help or advice do you need? Sorry, I don't understand this: "my qns is just on top of urs"

(I'm guessing it means "My question is just on top of yours," but I don't know who you're talking to.)
