They responded with bemusement...

They responded with bemusement to his attempt to find an easy solution to the problem.

Is "responded" an intransitive verb and "with bemusement" its complement in the sentence above?

----------------

I think it is an intransitive verb followed by its complement "with bemusement". I see the PP to his attempt to find an easy solution to the problem as an adjunct in that sentence.

Top answer

It is intransitive because it doesn't have a direct object. "With bemusement" is an adverbial prepositional phrase. "

It is intransitive because it doesn't have a direct object. "With bemusement" is an adverbial prepositional phrase. It should be "at" rather than "to."
