They managed to find a place to stay in. That's what I used to say until I learned what native speakers say. Based on what I know about other languages and what common sense says, I don't think it can be totally wrong, even if English has its peculiarities.

That's what I used to say until I learned what native speakers say. Based on what I know about other languages and what common sense says, I don't think it can be totally wrong, even if English has its peculiarities. It's probably unnatural, though.

You can say 'stay in' or 'stay at' instead of 'stay' in your sentence, but why would you want to use an inferior construction?
