They laid down and fell sleep before midnight, but when they heard wolves

Is this piece grammatical and natural?

At dusk, some scouts pitched their tents in a circle and then made a large bonfire. They were exhausted after an exhilarating day of adventures. They laid down and fell sleep before midnight, but when they heard wolves howling in nearby woods, the scouts were jolted out of their dreams and remained petrified like deer in headlights.

Top answer

It should be "They lay down and fell asleep ". The only other issue I have is with the use of "remained". It doesn't seem the right choice of word.
