They didn't mention how many people had died

You're watching the news and are expecting to see how many people have been infected and how many have died. They forget to mention the death count. The next day, you remember this and you say"
"They didn't even mention how many people had died." Is this correct? I would use the past perfect because it refers to the people who had died up until yesterday.
