They couldn't climb up...

Hi, great people!

Could anyone help me with this question?

They couldn’t climb up the mountain because of the storm.

A. The storm made it not capable of climbing up the mountain.

B. Their climbing up the mountain was unable due to the storm.

C. The storm made them impossible to climb up the mountain.

D. The storm discouraged them from climbing up the mountain.

I opt both D & B though I am not satisfied with the answer D. However, the key is “D.” I couldn’t understand why not B.Thanks in advance.

B does not work grammatically. 'Unable' refers to people, not the ability itself in active voice: ' They were unable'. In 'D', discouraged has a different meaning than the usual: to inhibit; prevent: this solution discourages rust.

Hi, Mr. Micawber!

I got it. I always appreciate your answer. They are very professional & thoughtful.

By the way, Could you tell me what's wrong with "A.The storm made it not capable of climbing up the mountain."?Why can't we use "capable here? Is it because we have to say "incapable" not "not capable"? Thanks in advance.
