they are split into even smaller tips/pieces

Geckos have over two million tiny hairs on the bottom of their feet. The hairs are extremely small ... they are split into even smaller tips.

HI,
I wonder if "tips" in the above can be replaced by "pieces." YOur comments? Thanks.

First, I don't understand the intended meaning. If I look at one of these hairs, what does it mean that it is 'split into even smaller tips/pieces'?'

I wonder if you mean 'roots'?
eg We say that a human hair has just one root, doesn't it?

Thanks, Clive.
I think it means "if it is observed under a microscope, the hair can be split into ..."

Hi,

They are is not at all the same as they can be.

And surely almost anything can be split into smaller pieces, so why even say that?
