They are sculpting the clay.

Does the above sound right? If yes, could you decide by the above whether they are sculpting the clay with hands or knives? Thanks.

Because the sentence talks about clay , I would tend to assume the sculpting is being done with hands. But then again, I don't know that much about sculpting.
