They

Is this sentence correct:

"And finally came the day when the three men were going to pay a contribution to Mankind for which they would always be grateful."

Note: By 'they', I mean the Mankind. Or should say 'it' in reference to Mankind?

Top answer

'they' is going to be ambiguous between 'the three men' and 'mankind'. 'pay a contribution' doesn't really work either. 'make' is a better choice there.

  • 'they' is going to be ambiguous between 'the three men' and 'mankind'.
  • 'pay a contribution' doesn't really work either.
  • 'make' is a better choice there.
  • Here's one solution, though you can probably find a better one after thinking about it a little more: And finally came the day when the three men were going to make a contribution to mankind, which would always be grateful for it.
  • Here 'it' refers to the contribution.
