The/Their-The turtle species

In some contemporary turtle species the moderately sharp and jagged edges of their horny jaws function as teeth.

In some contemporary turtle species the moderately sharp and jagged edges of the horny jaws function as teeth.

Guys,

ETS says second one is better than first one coz their is ambiguous and thus, replaces their with the in the second one.. But the moderately sharp and jagged edges cannot posses jaws therefore, should n't unambiguously refer to turtle species?

Furthermore, if its The jaws what makes jaws to refer back to turtle species ..implying species' jaws?

Please clarify

Thank you
