These / they

Hello! Could you help me?

May I use "what are they?"/"who are they?" in the same meaning as "what are these/those?"/"who are these/those?"?
I mean, we can say "what are these? - they are pens." for example, so can we say the same but in the question?

Yes you can use, they are pens, you can make it as a question as well, you can ask Are they pens?when someone asks you what are these, you should start like this, these are, and if someone asks what are those , you should say those are........... Shravan.
