These adverbs - how they fit into it?

Hi. I think an adverb answers the questions like "where?", "when?" and modifies either an adverb, an adjective or verb (if I am not mistaken). Could you tell me how what looks to be adverbs - "therefore" and "abroad" - in the following sentences fit into what said about what I think an adverb answers and modifies (as mentioned previously)? For example, do they modify which verb, or adverb or adjective if they do?

He was very good at helping them to accomplish what they want, therefore his nickname "helping hand."

He tried to find places abroad.
