Thesaurus question

Oxford Thesaurus of English says:

philosophy

noun 1 a lecturer in philosophy: thinking, reasoning, thought, wisdom, knowledge

Q. Those (especially thinking, reasoning) can be used in place of philosophy in that context?

(Of course, I was told that there is no such thing as an ideal synonym, for it is virtually impossible to find two words or phrases that are identical in denotation, connotation, frequency, familiarity, and appropriateness. But how do I make good use of those illustrations of the uses of the headwords and their alternatives in the thesaurus?)

Top answer

anonymous thinking, reasoning, thought, wisdom, knowledge None of these words can be directly substituted into the phrase "a lecturer in philosophy". The words have some kind of semantic association with "philosophy", but they are not really "synonyms".
