Vocabulary

'there/in there/over there'

Dear Teachers and Moderators

I found it difficult to make a clear distinction between 'there' and 'in there', 'there' and 'over there' as well.

1. I'll go there/I'll go in there

2. He is there/He is over there

3. People here are kind/People in here are kind (by the way)

Thanks in advance.

In indicates a location somehow enclosed-- within a room, a building, an institution. Simple there does not indicate whether the referent is in, on, under, behind , etc. Over indicates a farther distance than simply there , either physically or in the mind of the speaker.

Hi. Please help me with the following there cases. For the first two, which is correct, "there" or "in there"?

1. (talking about going into the room)

Let's go there (in there?)

2. (talking about someone in the room)

Hmm, I think he is there (in there?)

How about this? Which should it be, "here" or "in here"? Thank you for you
