Therefore?

“therefore” in the following sentence doesn’t sit well with me. If it were replaced by “thereby,” it would, though. I’d really appreciate your insight.

Scientific investigation begins by inventing a possible world. So does mythical thought. But the latter stops there. Having constructed what it considers not only as the best world but as the only possible world, it easily fits reality into its scheme. Every fact, every event, is interpreted as a sign that is emitted by the invisible forces controlling the world, and therefore that proves their existence and importance.
