Since "therefore" indicates an immediate consequence with what precedes, well, no, there's no reason why it should be there. "Thereupon" could do, though.

Most English translations have either 'Now when Jesus was born' or 'After Jesus was born'.
*** ergo, in Latin, literally translates into English as 'when therefore'. The verse does succeed an account, in Matthew, chapter 1, of the lineage of Jesus, and the details of his birth, so it doesn't sound terribly odd to see that detailed account followed by 'when therefore
