There were/was some fire and smoke

"There were some fire and smoke."

Or

"There was some fire and smoke."

I believe the second sentence is correct, but I'm not sure why. I'm hoping someone can explain this. Thank you!

2) After "There was" you can have two or more nouns if the first one is singular.

I would not even consider "were" in that sentence.
