There was/were a total of 200 pies?

Hello,

There was/were a total of 200 pies.

Which is correct?

I am pretty sure it is

A total of 200 pies WERE eaten, but I am wondering it is the same when we use "there was/were".
Thanks.

I would use 'a total of 200 pies was eaten', actually, but I suppose an argument can be made for notional concord, too.
