There was no record or there were no records?

Hi. Please help me with this. What would be the difference if there were any?

(talking/in conversation)

A: Have you found the records of his documents in our file?

B: No, sir. There was no record/were no records of his documents in our file.

Top answer

'Record(s)' of 'documents' is odd because record = document, and also both are odd because 'records' is in the question, so the word would not naturally be repeated by the 2nd speaker. Otherwise, either will work.
