There was no apple or there were no apples

He told me that he would put an apple for me in the refrigetator yesterday.
A. I went to his house today and found there was no apple in it.
B. I went to his house today and found there were no apples in it.

Which is natural, A or B?
He told me he would put "one apple" for me, so I think "there was no apple" is better.
Is my point of view right?
