There is with plural

Hello,
I have a question regarding one sentence from the excercise, which i acquainted while doing my English homework(i am not a native speaker). Here it is:The is/are the famous Theatre royal and a great many other attractions in Covent Garden.Does "is" refer only to the theater and the right answer would be "are" which refers not only to the theater, but to other attractions?
Thank you in advance.

Anonymous There is/are the famous Theatre royal and a great many other attractions in Covent Garden. Both is and are are acceptable when more than one subject follows the 'there' construction, and the first one is singular. There is no difference in meaning.
