There is vs There are

Hello everyone,

I just came up with the sentence below on my own.

1. There is some butter, a few cookies, and bottles of water on the table.

2. There are some butter, a few cookies, and bottles of water on the table.

Which sentence is correct? Please help.

I would always use 'is' if using a mass noun such as butter.

If you want to avoid the problem, use 'There are a few cookies, some butter...' and you lose the singular verb!
