This English teacher loves it. Existential 'there' is an extremely common part of the natural language. Did your teacher explain why or in what situation s/he doesn't like it?

There is and There are don't have any really interesting verbs. Maybe your teacher is trying to get you to be more imaginative in your choice of verbs.
