There is so much going on in the place.

There is so much going on in the place.

I cannot analyze the sentence. especially 'going on' here in the sentence, 'so much' modifies 'going on' and 'going on' here is a gerund or 'going on' modifies 'so much' behind and here 'going on' is a present participle?

Or this is a fixed expression, 'there is '-ing'?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance.
