There is or there are

Should I use "There is" or "There are" in the following sentence?

I'll put my Pepsi cans in the fridge and if THERE IS / THERE ARE one too many then I'll put it in another cupboard somewhere.

Thank you

I'd use "if there is one too many". However, without the "one" it would be "if there are too many".
