There is or there are

hi

are the following sentences correct?

There are three boxes , four tubes and some water.

Should I use there are or there is? I mean because of water can I use there are?

Top answer

There are three boxes, four tubes and some water . Existential "there" takes on the number of the displaced subject, which in this case is a coordination of three noun phrases, two of which are plural, so the verb should be the plural "are".
