there is or there are

hello everybody.
Can you help me this sentence ? In the sentence I should use " there is or there are". Can you explain why we use it ?

There is smell or flies or there are smell or flies

One smell, so there IS a smell. Many flies, so there ARE flies. IS is for singular, ARE is for plural.

IS is for singular, ARE is for plural.

Your sentences sound weird to me.
"smell" and "flies" are an odd combination.

I agree with Femtoangstrom. Note also:
There is a smell. There are flies.
There is the smell of garbage. I can hear the flies.

There is a smell of meat roasting. (one smell, use "is")
There are many flies in the house. Someone left the window open. (More than one fly, use "are")
