There is MUCH pollution?

"There is MUCH pollution" does not sound well to me. Though "There isn't much pollution" does.

I'd say There is a lot of pollution. Am I right? Are there other alternatives to "a lot" in that sentence?

Thanks.

Much without so, very or not is not common. I have read grammar books that say it's incorrect. However, some people occasionally do use much without those words, and I consider your sentence correct.

  • A lot of / lots of are also correct, perhaps somewhat informal.
  • There is a great deal of pollution and plenty of pollution are also possible.
