While I'm completing one of task on BritishCouncil website I've found following sentence. However, my question is whey they have used 'There is', even though 'number of people' is plural? If I had written this sentence, I would have written with "There are". Please someone tell me how come they used "There is" in following sentence.
There is an increasing number of people who don't like using cash to make payments.

Question 3 of the task 2.
There is an increasing number of people who don't like using cash to make payments. The writer has used 'is' because the word 'number' is singular. Both is an are are usually considered acceptable.
