There is and There are

I am wondering which of the following sentences is/are correct.

a) There is an orange and some apples on the table

b) There are an orange and some apples on the table.

You could probably argue either case, depending if you look at the fruit collectivelly or individually, but most likely the answer is singular. Awaiting a second opinion, however.

You could probably argue either case, depending if you look at the fruit collectivelly or individually, but most likely the answer is singular.

keithlawI am wondering which of the following sentences is/are correct.

a) There is an orange and some apples on the table

b) There are an orange and some apples on the table.
Both are acceptable and correct. You may make the agreement with the nearest noun or with the entire list of nouns.
