Because you use the article 'a' I find 'has' perfectly acceptable to my British ear. I see you are in America so therefore it is better to follow GG suggestion as she has an American ear.

My American Ear also prefers "there have been a number of." "A number (of something)" may look like it's grammatically singular, but logically the phrase refers to more than one item.
