There are so many similar English words.

I alway have a question that why the author uses this word but not that word when reading an article. and I don't have any clear idea about the difference between similar English words. For example,

solution vs resolution.

These two words both a similar meaning that a proper way to address a situation, but what the difference between them? By the way, resolution has more that one meanings, like a plan and definition of a displayable device. When the new year comes, many people will make a new year resolution. Besides, resolution can also describe how clear a screen can display. In this circumstance, resolution is like definition.
