There are or there is ?

hello again
Iwanted to know weather to fill in the blanks with '' there are ''or ''ther is'' and the reason for that .
...........a pen and two books.
...........some bread and four pens on the table.

When dummy there is followed by a compound subject and the first subject is singular, both a singular verb and a plural verb are correct. If the first subject is plural, a plural verb is of course mandatory. There is a pen and two books.
