There

Sir,

There are three universities in this city.

As I know that "there" is generally functions as an adverb.

But in this sentence what is function of the word "there".

Is it as an adverb or anything else?

Thanks.

Question: Can adverbs function as subjects? If not, then "there" must be nominal, a pronoun, an expletive known as existential "there". The true, or logical subject is "three universities": Three universities (Subject) are (copular Verb) in this city (Adverb)
