Then that was the norm

Dear all,

I saw the following conversation between a son and his dad in a video on 'situational English.' Here, could you please tell me whether the usage "then that was the norm" is correct and commonly used?

Dad: Remember, when I was your age, I had only one pair of sandals. When It was damaged, I used to repair and use it, instead of throwing it away.

Son: Dad, but it was a long time ago and then that was the norm.

It's correct and fairly common. I would have put 'then' at the end:

That was the norm then.

In other words, that was what everyone did at that time (in history).
