Then?

Hi, everyone.

Could you tell me whether the comma should be used before the clause in bold?

Ray of light passes though the cornea and pupil. It falls on the lens, then lens focuses it on the retina.

Thanks!

silak12 A/The ray of light passes though the cornea and pupil. It falls on the lens, then the lens focuses it on the retina. The comma is required, but some people think that this use of "then" to join independent clauses is incorrect.

  • silak12 A/The ray of light passes though the cornea and pupil.
  • It falls on the lens, then the lens focuses it on the retina.
  • The comma is required, but some people think that this use of "then" to join independent clauses is incorrect.
  • They would say it should be "and then".
  • On the other hand, such use is widespread, and probably many people do not notice it as an error.
