You mean before the word, I presume. The answer is, 'Usually'. I don't suppose that you have the sentence for which you are considering comma use?

It's in sentences such as the following that confuse me
'He went to the park, then went to his friends' ( I would put a comma after park. )
'He passed his exams and then went to university' ( I would not put a comma after exams. )
