hello everyone , I met with a question when reading different texts .They're listed as follows

I wonder whether I should use themselves or itself . I prefer themselves but during a recent exam the answer gave me itself(I am from China)

"themselves" refers to "currents," and it makes sense to say that the project will not be guided or controlled by any other mechanism.

Good point, but that's not the best way to phrase it. I would prefer:
"... floating barrier to let the ocean currents themselves concentrate the plastic."
