Them or they?

Is it correct to say "If I was them, I would never say anything at all" or "If I was they, I would never say anything at all"?

I suppose 'If I were they' is the most formally correct., though I think most speakers of BrE would probably say 'If I were them' or 'If I was them'.

It's simpler to say 'In their place'.
