Joseph AA. Is the object pronoun "them" at the end of the sentence optional?

It is wrong to put the pronoun there because there is already a direct object – the relative pronoun "that." The antecedent is "six seamen."

1. He was given two guns and left on the ship to watch the six seamen that Captain's group didn't trust (them).
