This is how I understand it.

Both of us had colorful books. Hers were in English; mine were in French. [hers = her books]

My friends and some of my father's friends attended the funeral. His seemed still offended. [his = his friends]

We have enemies; they have enemies. Theirs are much more dangerous. [theirs = their enemies]
