Their role / appearing / old men

Hi teachers,

I apologize for the content that seems uncomfortable.

More than 10,000 children in Europe smacked,....by priests who were supposed to protect them. Bishops and spokesmen denying or minimizing their role - appearing, for all the world, like old men who seem not to understand the seriousness of what they've done.

1. What does "their role" refer to?

2. Does "old men" refer to "Bishops and spoken" or "priests"?

3. Does "appearing" have the meaning of "making it look like"?

Thank you.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your help. I left two words out.

I still have a few questions.

1. Does the "dash" between their role and appearing make the lack of verb trouble away?

2. "their role" in which "their" refer to the priests?

3. Old men refers "the Bishops" only, spokemen excluded?

Thank you.
