Their or there?

I found the sentence "The mathematics in the article, extensive though it is, seems to be their to obfuscate rather than elucidate." However, "their" doesn't make sense to me. It seems that it is an error and the correct writing is "there". Do you agree? I need to know because I would like to cite the sentence. If "their" is false I would replace it by [there].
