Their lunch vs. their lunches

Is it their lunch or their lunches?
The sentence is: They are eating their lunch. Is this correct? Please tell me. Thank you.

Top answer

If they are sitting down together for the meal, 'lunch' is more usual. If they have gone their separate ways and the meals are different, and it is important to make that clear, then 'lunches' would be a better choice.
