I don't understand the use of "their" in the above sentence. Why is it "their" why not "HER"? What function does the word "their" has in the sentence?

It is so-called "singular they". It is used instead of "he" or "she" when the *** of the person is not known. I personally dislike this kind of use of singular "they". In fact, I have suggested that this message be changed to pick up the person's *** from their profile, where this is specified.
