The/A Thumbs Up

Hello everyone,

A. Could you please tell me if either "the" or "a" is correct before "thumbs up" in the following sentences?

1. He gave me the thumps up.

2. He gave me a thumps up.

B. If both are okay, could you please tell what the difference is between them? Or which one is commoner?
