The/a mental hospital - AE

In AE one can end up in THE hospital, but does the same rule apply when that regards 'mental/psychiatric hospital'? End up in 'the/a' mental hospital?

Thanks!

"If you don't eat, you're going to end up in the hospital." (You wouldn't say "a hospital" here.)
