The years

"The" years of research proved pointless

Is that a correct sentence? I think "the" before years should not be there. Isn't it like "Years of Noun" without "the"

But I am not sure.

Could you help me clarify it?

There were years of research without any results. (No specific period of time.)
The past two years of research were fruitless. (Specific period of time.)
